If your looking for a Vietnam movie that is hard to watch and disturbing, this is for you. What a better way to spend your afternoon, then watching a film based around a rape incident. I know your going to run me over at blockbuster. Brian De Palma had the odious task of directing this material. He doesn’t disappoint, its good in a sense that it tells a true story but it lacks something that fails to make it great. The female lead is great; you can feel her terror and pain. Sean Penn as Sergeant Meserve is evil and believable. His performance is amazing. Fox is good as Eriksson but at times he sounds whiny and I kept thinking of family tides. De Palma should have realized this and cast somebody else or waited a couple of years before making the film. Then, we get to the part of the movie where we realize Eriksson’s been dreaming the whole time. Really, can you say cop-out? How about cliché? What a stupid ending to a movie!
Casualties of war, has some good extras. Eriksson’s war is a good interview with Michael J. Fox. A half hour documentary about the film is included, it is interesting. Finally, five deleted scenes are included; none of these are remarkable.
